Working Overtime

Match Report by Chris Beal

Streatham put in 2 battling performances over the weekend, coming away with a 5-4 win in Slough before a hard fought 4-5 defeat in overtime against the Jets the following evening.

Streatham would strike early Saturday with 1:26 on the clock as Roman Cathcart would apply the finish having been set up by Aidan Doughty and Harvey Stead. The Jets would apply plenty of pressure but could not find a way past Danny Milton in the Streatham net. The Jets had come out the gate throwing the body, but new American import signing Dylan Dix would answer back with a hit of his own flattening a jets player with a big open ice hit.

Danny Ingoldsby would then extend the lead to 2-0 at 15 minutes, with the assist going to JJ Pitchley and Louis Colvin introducing himself to the Streatham fanbase with a helper on the goal.

The end of the 1st period would see the Jets find a way to tilt the ice in their favour as Streatham struggled to stay out of the penalty box. Starting with Jordan Gregory who having been boarded by Kyle Bradburn responded by getting into a fight with the Jets forward after nothing was called at 16 minutes. Ethan Lane would then be called for a high stick to putting the RedHawks on a PK to start the 2nd.

The Jets would capitalize on sustained pressure and a tired Streatham bench after the penalty kill. And at 22 minutes, Seb Mohr would set up Ben Ealey Newman who would net to pull the hosts within 1 goal.

Streatham would then take another of penalty. Danny Ingolsdby being called for roughing at 23 minutes. Allowing the Jets to convert the power play to tie the game at 2-2. Jacob Soper setting up Juha Lindgren for the finish.

A James Warman hooking penalty would then allow the Jets to take the lead 4 minutes later. As Seb Mohr would score unassisted at 26 minutes. Putting the Jets ahead 3-2.

Streatham would push for an equalizer and tie the game up at 38 minutes, as coach Ben Paynter would lead the way netting from the half board off a pass from Vanya Antonov. To close out the period with everything level at 3-3.

Streatham would retake the lead early in the 3rd period, as Ethan Lane would score at 46 minutes with an assist to Harvey Stead. Making it 4-3 Streatham.

A JJ Pitchley slashing penalty at 48 minutes would allow the Jets to apply pressure and while Streatham would kill the penalty. The Jets would capitalize minutes later as Juha Lindgren would net his second of the game on 53 minutes, tying things up at 4-4.

It looked like the game would be heading for an extra frame as the clock ticked down. But at 5930 chaos around the Jets crease would see Aidan Doughty take possession of the puck and back hand it by Matt Smital to make it 5-4 Streatham with 30 seconds of regulation left. The Jets would go all out in the final 30 seconds looking to equalize but Danny Milton and the Streatham D would hold strong to deny the Jets and take the win in regulation.

The following night saw the return fixture on the High Road. Several injuries meant it would have to be a battle of a performance for the RedHawks due a shortened bench. From the face off Streatham played the kind of hockey teams running a short bench tend to. High energy hockey designed to try and build a lead before fatigue sets in later in the game.

7 minutes in and that effort would be rewarded as Harvey Stead opened the scoring, assisted by Ziggy Beesley and Luke Brittle. With neither side able to score after this The period would end with Streatham up 1-0.

Streatham would extend that lead in the 2nd as at 21 minutes, Ziggy Beesley would find Luke Brittle in front of net who would add the first of 2 goals on the night.

But with the score 2-0 to Streatham the game began to mirror the night before as penalty trouble would strike. Once again allowing the Jets a way back into the game. First a charging call against Ethan Lane would see the Jets convert on the powerplay at 2355. Juha Lindgren once again the scorer for the Jets.

With momentum on their side the Jets would push forward. Streatham would fight a valiant rear-guard but a failure to clear would see the puck end up on the stick of Luke Clark at 33 minutes. His shot would find the net and tie the game at 2-2.

An Ingoldsby slashing penalty at 3540 would give the Jets the opportunity to take the lead. Juha Lindgren would convert at 3740, to put the guests in front by 1 to end the period.

Streatham would answer back at the start of the 3rd period. A goal mouth melee at 4109 seeing JJ Pitchley shovel the puck over the line past Ruari McGibbon in the jets net.

The Jets would however then retake the lead, after Streatham failed to convert on a pair of powerplay chances. Jacob Soper finding the twine at 4909 with help from Connor Redmond and Kyle Bradburn. Setting up a tense closing 11 minutes of the game.

Streatham would pressure and pressure McGibbon with chances unable to land quality shooting opportunities with the Jets closing off the lanes.

But at 5548 Luke Brittle would thread the needle and find a way through to score the equalizer. With Beesley and Antonov picking up the assists.

A tense 5 minutes followed as both sides attempted to find a winning goal and avoid overtime. But with no one able to make a breakthrough the clock ticked down, and the game went to overtime.

The Jets would see the lion’s share of the chances and even when Streatham got the puck in OT found themselves forced wide or poke checked off the puck. Overtime is about avoiding turning over the puck, which is what would release Ben Ealey Newman at 6151 to slot the puck around Brett Shepherd to win the game for the Jets.

Post-game, coach Paynter was pleased with the weekend and how is team had dug deep with a short bench. Despite the loss on home ice.

“I’m happy with the weekend, we always want to win and we’re competitors so it’s disappointing to lose today. But if you look at the weekend, we were solid. We had a real good game last night we were disciplined; we had a bit of battle in us. We pulled it back late, we won it late. Which I am really pleased about. And if you look at tonight, we’re short bodies, with 3 D men and me filling in, and as a result some line combos we wouldn’t usually have. It’s a difficult task, but to take that Jets team, who is a good team. And are reigning champions for a reason, taking them to overtime in a second game where we’re tired, I’m very pleased. And I think it’ll be a positive season.”
