Breaking down the Windebank Wall

Match Report by Chris Beal

Streatham continued the run of strong form on home ice with a win over the Invicta Dynamos on Saturday evening, the score line of 5-2 to the hosts after a later flurry of goals doesn’t tell the full story of a game that saw the Streatham offence locked in a duel with Dynamos netminder Brad Windebank that would see him stop a total of 58 shots.

Streatham being camped in the opponent’s offensive zone and peppering opposition netminders has become a thing in recent home games and there was no change to this in the early going between the 2 sides. Early on Streatham looked to be on the board as JJ Pitchley’s long range effort was banked in off Jared Lanes skate. But the goal was washed out by referee Mark Goodfellow for Lane having kicked the puck in.

Streatham would continue to pressure the Dynamos net offensively forcing a series of big saves out of Windebank. Before getting on the board at 435. Vanya Antonov feeding a puck across net into the path of Ethan Lane who would skate in unmarked for the 1 timer at the back post to make it Streatham 1-0 Invicta

Games between the Dynamos and the RedHawks are always chippy affairs with battles all over the ice. A combination of physical plays and Windebank continuing to frustrate a pushing Streatham offence would see things hit a boiling point at 739. As Harrison Lillis and Ethan Lane would collide behind the Mos net, and upon getting back up drop the gloves for a fight that would go the distance.

Things would continue to be physical through the rest of the 1st with Windebank continuing to stop everything stopped at him. At the other end of the ice Streatham goalie Brett Shepherd would stop all 6 shots fired his way by the Mo’s on counterattack chances.

Invicta would see themselves in penalty trouble to end the first as import Daniel Gatenby would first pick up a 2-minute cross checking penalty at 1421 before then immediately collecting an interference penalty as he left the penalty box at 1624. But Windebank would again keep the Dynamos in the game stopping everything as the period wound down 1-0 Streatham

The second period would see Streatham continue the offensive pressure on the Dynamos net with Windebank pulling off a series of highlight reel saves. Including an old school pad stacking windmill move. Streatham would also miss 2 open net chances as the finishing touch continued to allude them. The second would end Streatham 1-0 Invicta still

Streatham would start the 3rd on a powerplay that had been given at 3952 in the second as Dan Gatenby had taken a delay of game penalty. Despite the man advantage the RedHawks still couldn’t make further inroads on Windebank and extend the score. Untill 4715 when the dam finally burst for the Dynamos and Streatham would score 3 times to effectively take the game.

First at 4715, a save, and clearance attempt would end up finding Danny Ingoldsby. Ingoldsby would set up Jared Lane, but Lane would be forced to lay it back to Jordan Gregory who would capitalize on chaos in the crease to fire it by Windebank, 2-0 Streatham.

2 minutes later at 4917 Vanya Antonov would make it 3-0 as he would appear to bank in a chance off a rebound from Ethan Lanes shot. There would be protests that again the puck had been kicked in, but it was deemed a good goal on this occasion

A minute later at 5032 Streatham would extend the lead to 4-0 as Ziggy Beesley and JJ Pitchley would release Luke Brittle who would head up the centre lane and fire it by Windebank to wrap up Streatham’s scoring at 4-0

But Invicta would draw a measure of consolation, in knowing they had denied Streatham goalie Shepherd a shutout, as at 5739 Cameron Pywell would net for the Dynamos with an assist from Regan O’Neil

Post-game coach Paynter was pleased at the level of domination shown by his team.

“I think we were good all game, we had a bit of a flurry at the end there towards the end of the game. We dominated possession and overall, we were all over them. We know how Invicta play and how their goalie plays, we know he’s a good goalie who keeps them in games. But they had nothing offensively this evening. Brett dealt well with any offence they did get. And overall, I’m pleased with the performance top to bottom really.”

The two sides met again the following evening with Streatham continuing to dominate the Gillingham team. As they completed a 6-point weekend with a 7-0 win over the Dynamos at Planet Ice Gillingham. Ryan Watt, Jared Lane, Sam Waller, Ziggy Beesley, Aidan Doughty, Vanya Antonov and JJ Pitchely with the goals as Danny Milton collected man of the match on and 18 shot shut out.

Streatham’s next game will be the away game v the Slough Jets on 25th October. Then it’s a road trip to Romford on Saturday 1st November. Before a return to action on the high road on Sunday 2nd November facing off at 18:45pm.
