GOOD THINGS HAPPEN WHEN YOU GO TO THE NET
Match Report by Chris Beal
The RedHawks brushed off the disappointment of missing out on the Britton cup the weekend before, by winning both games to secure a much needed 6-point weekend to keep dreams of a league title alive with a win in Romford before a home ice win over fellow contenders Chelmsford.
aturday the RedHawks travelled to North London and took on the Romford Raiders, coming away 11-1 winners in a game where Streatham would chase Romford Raiders National league netminder Owen Rider from the net after 7 goals. Alan Lack, Ryan Watt, Dan Rose all with single goals, Jared Lane with a brace and both Danny Ingoldsby and Luke Brittle netting a hattrick.
The Following evening the RedHawks faced another team from Essex, this time the Chelmsford Chieftains. Another home sell out brought a loud and raucous atmosphere to the High Road for this hotly anticipated clash between two sides fighting with Slough for the title.
Streatham would have a lion’s share of the offence in the opening phases of the game. But Brandon Stones in the Chieftains net would stop anything, and everything being thrown at him. Meanwhile Chelmsford would look to strike on the counterattack with Brett Shepherd coming up with some big saves.
However, at 1642 the Chieftains would trap the RedHawks in their own zone and retain the possession. With no way to clear and get a line change on the Chieftains would take advantage as Cam Bartlett fired in from the slot to make it 1-0 to the visitors.
Coach Paynter had talked about his sides ability to fight back and find ways to win in recent games v the Chieftains. And this was on display moments later, as a penalty against Cam Bartlett put Streatham on the powerplay. Dylan Dix and Dan Rose would work the puck from the half boards one side across the top to a waiting Harvey Stead on the opposite side who’s one timer would fly by Stones to level the game 1 a piece, at 1905 on the clock.
The second period would see the agitation both ways amp up, along with the physicality. Streatham would land themselves in a touch of penalty trouble as first Ryan Watt and Euan Morrison would have a disagreement along the boards, before Ethan Lane would be assessed for slashing at handing the Chieftains a powerplay. But the resulting kill would shift momentum in the RedHawks favour. And when Chelmsford’s John Beldecos would take a cross checking penalty for at 3104. Jared Lane would take advantage skating in off the wing from a stretch pass by Dylan Dix and roofing the puck past Stones on a tight angle to put the Redhawks Infront at 3224.
But the momentum would shift again in the game. And another Chieftains powerplay would allow them to once again equalize as at 3630 Alexander Maltsev level things up for the visitors heading into the break.
Streatham would waste little time at the start of the third period re-establishing a lead. As at 4036 Danny Ingoldsby would find a way to handle the puck through the lanes, and back hand it from close range past Stones to make it 3-2 Streatham. The RedHawks would push looking for another goal to extend the lead. But Stones would hold on allowing the Chieftains to find a way back into the game as the third entered its final phases.
At 55 minutes on the clock, the Chieftains would once again trap the RedHawks, allowing Grant Bartlett to set up brother Cam who’s finish would find the back on the net to tie the game up with 4 minutes on the clock.
Just as with the 1 goal thriller a month earlier between the 2 sides, this game would have 1 final chapter.
At 57 minutes Streatham would gain control of the puck in the Chieftain’s zone. A long-range effort from Sam Waller at the point would be redirected to the net by Alan Lack. An initial pad save by Stones would rebound to a waiting Dan Rose who would apply the finish. Stones would get a piece of the puck, but it would bobble over the line to the roar of the Sell-out crowd
Chelmsford would pull Stones looking for the crucial equalizer but to no avail as the clock ticked down to give Streatham the win 4-3 on the night
Post-game captain Ryan Watt was happy with the result and the team’s effort
“It was a massive game for us, a massive win and it was a must win game for us. But right now, every game for us is a must win if we want to win the league title. It was a close game, everyone played well. Last time out they scored with a minute left to win it, but today it was our turn to get that late winner and secure the win for the boys.”
The must win games continue for the RedHawks as up next is an away trip to Cardiff on Saturday the 7th before a 17:00 showdown on Sunday evening with the Slough Jets.
