Streatham Sink Buccaneers,

Before 7th heaven against Devils

Match Report by Chris Beal

Streatham completed a six point weekend with a 6-2 win over the Romford Buccaneers on Saturday before defeating the Solent Devils 7-1 on the High Road Sunday.

Saturday’s game would get off to a rough start for the RedHawks as a turnover released Cole McCluskey who would net the opener for the hosts. Streatham would equalize quickly though as Aidan Doughty redirected the puck into the net from a Jordan Gregory long range attempt.

A minute later Ethan Lane would net the goa ahead goal for the RedHawks going top shelf past Max Van Mullem in the Buccs net.

2 minutes later Ryan Watt would make it 3-1 to Streatham heading into the break, with another top shelf snipe past Van Mullem.

In the second Streatham would strike just 1 minute into the period. As Danny Ingoldsby would strike from Infront of the net to make it 4-1 RedHawks.

2 minutes later a turnover and release pass in the neutral zone would see JJ Pitchley in behind the Buccaneers defence alone against Van Mullen. He would slot the puck 5 hole on the netminder to extend the Streatham lead to 5-1.

Jared Lane would wrap up Streatham’s scoring at 28 minutes, to further extend the lead to 6-1 in favour of Streatham.

The Buccaneers would get one goal back during the period as a minute later Shay Woolmore would score to put the Buccaneers within 4 of the RedHawks. But that would be where the scoring ended.

The 3rd would play out scoreless, however not without incident as at 5019 Woolmore would charge a Streatham player along the boards. Drawing a response from Ben Paynter. Woolmore would sit for charging and Paynter for roughing, along with Danny Ingoldsby who also became involved in the scrum.

The final 10 minutes would be free of flash points and Streatham would take the points back to the High Road winning 6-2.

With Halloween having been just 2 days before it seemed fitting that Sunday’s guests on the High Road were the Solent Devils.

Streatham would start the game in typical fashion choking off the Devils offence and peppering the crease area of Rory Martin-Edwards with relentless offensive waves` before 7 minutes in Aidan Doughty would open the scoring after a feed into the central area by Jared Lane. Martin-Edwards would hold everything else at bay for the remainder of the period. But the shot count of 6 on Danny Milton and 17 on Martin-Edwards told the story of the period.

Solent would come out charging in the second getting on the board just 30 seconds in. Alex Murrays rush down the wing and centring pass to a waiting Charlie Wedge tied up the game at 1-1.

On the bench coach Paynter will no doubt have asked for an immediate response from his team, and he got one. At 24 minutes Ethan Lane would net his first of the game, to put the RedHawks back in front. Before 3 minutes later at 27 minutes adding his second to further extend the lead by 2.

Then at 29 minutes JJ Pitchley would extend that lead to 3 goals, as his slapshot flew past Martin-Edwards extending the RedHawks lead and putting them up 4-1. Aidan Doughty would then net his second of the game at 31 minutes to send the RedHawks into the break ahead 5-1.

Games between Streatham and Solent seldom pass without flash points, and these began to boil over in the final period. Dylan Dix and Aidan Doughty would lay in the hits, while former Streatham junior Aston Lacey would begin pushing the buttons of Streatham players looking to draw penalties.

While this would pay dividends as Ryan Watt and Ethan Lane would both take the bait and sit for holding and charging penalties. The Devils could not make any pressure pay during the power plays.

And at 5120 Aidan Doughty would complete his hattrick to make it 6-1 Streatham. Only 30 seconds later the game would boil over as Aston Lacey would charge JJ Pitchley. Ryan Watt would get hold of Lacey who after shielding would receive a few whacks from Watt. Before Pitchley would also attempt to get at the Devils forward. All 3 would end up in the box. Giving the Devils another power play chance. But instead, it would be the Devils finding themselves under pressure as Martin Edwards was forced to make several huge saves.

At 5734 Danny Milton would collect the rare goalie assist, setting up Luke Brittle for the RedHawks 7th and final goal of the game.

Post-game head coach Paynter was pleased overall. But felt the team needed to be better in the opening period.

“Pretty routine I think everyone’s happy with how we were relentless all over the ice. And a positive result against a team that can cause slip ups. I don’t think we were good in the first, but we had a reset in the break. We picked it up from there and I’m pleased with the response.”

Up next on the High Road it’s the Cardiff Fire.

Sunday 9th November facing off, at 1845.
