Streatham Put Out Fire And Exorcise Devils

Match Report by Chris Beal

Streatham didn’t concede a goal over 120 minutes of play and came away
from the weekend with a 9-0 win away in Cardiff before rounding out
the weekend with a 6-0 win over Solent Devils.

However, the maximum point weekend was set against the backdrop of the
ending of Streatham’s reign as defending league champions. As over in
Slough a Jets 2-0 win over Cardiff Fire sent the league title for the
24/25 season to Berkshire. Streatham missing out on a 5th consecutive
title by 1 point in the end.

Saturday Streatham came away with the win in Cardiff, 9-0. Danny
Milton would collect the shut out. It would take Streatham most of the
first to score, as the first was scored by JJ Pitchley at 1542. With
Jared Lane adding a second a minute later at 1622.

Streatham had struggled to get pucks by Fire goalie Ben Scanlan in the
first. But would chase the netminder from the goal by the end of the
second with 5 goals. Ben Paynter at 2158 scoring to make it 3-0. Then
a flurry of goals between 35 and 38 minutes scored by Ethan Lane, Ryan
Watt, Roman Cathcart, and Aidan Doughty would see the RedHawks up 7-0
after 2.

Streatham would only add 2 more in the 3rd as Scanlans replacement
Gemma Davies would put in a solid display. Only Luke Brittle at 44
minutes and Roman Cathcart with his second of the game would find a
way past the netminder to end the scoring Streatham 9-0 Cardiff

Sunday the RedHawks would wrap up the regular season with a 7-0 win on
home ice over the Solent Devils.

Streatham would open the scoring 1:37 into the game as Harvey Stead
would sneak a puck through Rory Martin-Edwards in the Solent net. The
score would stay at 1-0 to the hosts for 8 minutes. Before at 949 Ben
Paynter would shovel a loose puck over the line to make it 2-0
RedHawks.

Martin Edwards would deny everything else Streatham would throw at him
for the remainder of the period. While at the opposite end, Brett
Shepherd would do the same in the Streatham net.

The scoring would pick up again 6 minutes into the second as Danny
Ingoldsby scored the first of 2 goals at 26 minutes, before another 3
minutes later at 29 minutes extending the score to 4-0 at the close of
the second period

Streatham would add 2 more in the third period. Brendan Baird netting
at 45 minutes. To make it 5-0 Streatham.

Luke Brittle would score the final goal of the game at 49 minutes.
Prompting Solent coach Alex Murray to call a timeout however this did
nothing to change the Devils fortunes.

Games between Streatham and Solent are always a big rivalry game and
so there is always a feeling anything could boil over at any time. And
at 50 minutes exactly this happened. After Murray shoved Ziggy Beesley
on to the Devils net Ryan Watt took exception and got in a few punches
in the ensuing melee.

The Game would wrap up without further incident or scoring, ending
Streatham 6-0 Solent.

Post-game Head Coach Paynter was happy to see his team put in a solid
performance. And was now focussed on the play offs the following
weekend

“I think we were really good tonight; we moved the puck well. Working
off the puck really well. We were clinical when we needed to be.
Really pleased in terms of that performance and the weekend as a
whole. Next weekend, we’ve got one plan. Which is to go in and win 2
games of hockey, simple as that.”

With the regular season now over. Streatham will head into the play
offs with a place in the National Play off final at Sheffield in a few
weeks’ time at stake. This coming weekend facing Swindon Wildcats 2 in
a 2-leg quarter final. With game 1 on Saturday on the High Road facing
off at 1730. Before the away leg in Swindon the next day. The winner
will meet either Chelmsford or Romford in the semi-finals the weekend
after.
